Hi, Geoff:

I recall your lovely slide show from our 1981? AGM at Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club with great respect. To my mind, your is the most amazing W cruise ever done. I have your log posted at http://www.wayfarer-international.org/WIC/Cruise.Logs/1981.Geoff.Heath.log/Geoff.Heath.log.html and have been trying to track you down to see if those slides might still be around and available to add to the above coverage?? Best regards, Uncle Al (W3854)

A memorial service and celebration of Dan Sutherland's life will be held at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Saturday, March 10, at 2:00 pm. We expect the service to begin in the Small Boat Shed, and continue over at our Boat Shop, a fitting place for a memorial for Dan.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in memory of Daniel Sutherland be made to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum where they will be placed in CBMM's Boat Building Apprentice Endowment Fund, CBMM, PO Box 636, St. Michaels, MD 21663

Thanks, Peter, for this thoughtful comment. I fully agree with your fundamental point about recognizing the value systems at play. I would argue that traditional workboats, even if they used "primitive" materials and techniques, were actually generally well-built - remember that this was a matter of livelihood. The results may have brought scorn from outside observers, but often this was due to their narrow-mindedness as opposed to objective performance issues. The boats also tended to be well-tuned to the task and local environment at hand and not at all well-designed for broader conditions. Judging them as generic boats applying to a variety of contexts is not fair, nor is disappointment if modern interpretations fail beyond the same contexts. So, in short, we are in agreement.

Adding hatches is a good idea.

Another Idea is to have the top of the fabric be open and fold over like a dry bag (I have seen sof kayaks made like this - check out yostwerks.com). This allows the skin to be opened up when you are done.

Another idea is to use a breathable material such as tyvek on the topside.

Tim Anderson has some valid comments when he constructed his sof outrigger on the instructables website. I believe if you totally seal the wood it can create problems with rot (sealed areas that rub away) since it does not dry all the way.
